August - the Ark15, 2019
After the rain
The sun is bright , the water heavy in the air
Shall we let the beasts out father?
They are stomping in the hull
Oh daughter - wait a while and see
there may be orders on the way
there may be orders on the way
If we are given orders
That officially its over
This God-sent calamity
I’ve sent a scout out , we will wait
For his return and if it’s calm
We may well reconsider - but for now …
Oh father - there’s a butterfly
Surely that can only mean
That there is foliage nearby - and trees -
Look there’s blossoms on the waves
Hush hush my girl
It is a corpse and those aren’t flowers
They’re entrails glinting in the sun
At least there’s sunshine
It’s been many days
It’s been forty since the storm
I have been counting - look - there’s pollen in the air
And thistledown
Its floating by in drowsy drifts
Oh father - there’s a pelican
Its ashes , daughter , blowing by
and that is just a burned out log
When have you ever seen a pelican ?
They have been gone a century
You are imagining these things
You may have fever . Go below the deck and I will steer the ark
Oh father did you feel that bump ?
I think we are in shallow seas
I think the ark has hit the ground
Oh - forty is it ?
I fear that they will sink the ship
Splinter the timbers with their hooves
Theyre pawing with their claws
I’m sure that some of them can swim
At least the bufallos and bears
